Bay High School Swimming & Diving Shines at District Championship
Bay High School's Swimming & Diving teams made a significant impact at the District Championship on February 14, 2025, with an outstanding performance that marks a milestone for the school. Both the boys' and girls' teams finished 8th in a highly competitive field, with the boys scoring 111 points against 32 teams and the girls scoring 80 points against 37 teams. Highlighting the event, 8 athletes from Bay High School have advanced to the State meet in Canton; this is the highest number of athletes the school has sent in the past five years. Luke Filiatraut starred for the boys, setting a new school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.08 seconds and placing 7th. He also clinched a 5th place in the 100 butterfly with a 51.10, he is heading to the state meet in both events . The 200 medley relay team, comprising Filiatraut, Ollie Brown, John Allan, and Peyton Myers, also broke an 11-year-old school record with a time of 1:39.08, qualifying them for the state competition. The boys 400 freestyle relay of Allan, Myers, Brown and Filiatraut also qualified for the state meet with a 5th place finish at Districts with a time of 3:19.78. Ollie Brown, another remarkable performer, qualified for state in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:00.61, while freshman Ruby Render made her debut state qualification in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.50. Both divers from Bay High, Charlie Vatolin and Belle Dent, are returning to State, with Vatolin triumphing at the District meet with an impressive score of 435.30 and is now the second-seed for the State meet. The commitment and hard work of the entire team, including Peyton Myers, John Allan, Lily Wavak, Moriah Murtha, Emery Ziemnik, Cecilia Gomez, Gwynn Miller, Jen Harman, Liam Jager, Ilias Ghaffari, Sam Farrar, Jason Hartzell, Hannah Starnes, Elyse Mull and Erin Belveal all had strong swims and dives at Districts and were pivotal to Bay's success throughout the season. The school community celebrates this accomplishment and looks forward to their representation at the State level.
