Bay High Swimmers and Divers post strong finishes at CWC meet

Bay High School Swimming and Diving delivered a strong all-around performance at the CWC Swimming and Diving Meet in Lakewood, as the Rockets’ girls team placed third with 208.5 points and the boys team finished fourth with 219 points on Saturday. Behind multiple meet records, relay victories and deep scoring across events, Bay continued its momentum heading into the postseason.

On the boys side, junior standout Luke Filiatraut set the tone with a dominant day in the pool. Filiatraut won both the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, breaking the meet record in each event. He touched first in the 200 freestyle in 1:47.39 and came back to win the 100 butterfly in 53.02, capping an undefeated individual regular season. His performances led the boys team in scoring and headlined a strong showing in the conference lineup.

Bay’s boys 200 medley relay added another highlight by winning the conference title while also rewriting the meet record book. The quartet of Filiatraut, Ollie Brown, John Allan and Ilias Ghaffari posted a time of 1:43.61 and controlled the race from the start to secure the victory. Brown, a senior, turned in a complete meet of his own, finishing second in individual scoring for the boys. He placed third in the 200 individual medley in 2:06.42 and took second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.75, then closed his day as part of the second-place 400 freestyle relay alongside Filiatraut, Ghaffari and Sam Farrar.

Depth proved critical for the Rockets as several other boys reached the podium. Sophomore Liam Jager finished fifth in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.08, while junior sprinter Ghaffari added a pair of top-six finishes, placing fifth in the 50 freestyle (24.41) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (55.26). Farrar also contributed in the 100 freestyle with a fifth-place finish in 54.89. Bay’s 200 freestyle relay of Farrar, Allan, Jager and Jason Hartzell earned a fourth-place finish, adding valuable relay points to round out the boys scoring.

The Rockets’ girls team matched the boys’ energy with a podium-heavy performance that carried Bay to third place overall. Sophomore Ruby Render led the girls in scoring, claiming runner-up finishes in both of her individual events. Render clocked 2:05.97 for second in the 200 freestyle and 57.04 for second in the 100 freestyle, consistently keeping Bay in contention in the middle-distance and sprint events.

Senior sprinter Lily Wavak followed closely behind Render on the girls side, finishing second in overall individual scoring for Bay. Wavak placed second in the 50 freestyle in 27.05 and added a sixth-place finish in the 100 freestyle at 1:03.08. Sophomore Moriah Murtha reached the podium in both of her individual events, taking home top finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:33.38) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.00). Sophomore backstroker Emery Ziemnik added a key fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke, touching in 1:13.80 to bolster the Rockets’ point total.

Bay’s divers opened the meet with critical early points. Divers Elyse Mull and Anika Schultz placed fifth and sixth, respectively, to help establish a strong scoring base for the Rockets. In the relays, the girls 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams—both comprised of Render, Murtha, Ziemnik and Wavak—each finished third, giving Bay two more podium finishes and reinforcing the program’s balance across strokes and distances.

With meet records, conference relay titles and a series of top-three finishes on both the boys and girls sides, Bay High’s swimmers and divers left Lakewood with momentum and confidence. The Rockets’ combination of star performances from athletes like Filiatraut, Render and Brown, along with steady contributions throughout the lineup, positions the team well as it turns its attention to sectional and postseason competition.
