Bay Boys Track & Field opens season with third-place finish at Nelson Howe Invitational

Bay Boys Track & Field opened the season with a tie for third place and 80 points Thursday night at the Nelson Howe Invitational at Firelands High School, powered by a handful of strong early-season finishes and a winning relay performance. The Rockets were led by runner-up efforts from Mikey Taylor in the 800 meters and Adrian Ray in the 1,600, along with a first-place finish from the 4x200 relay team.
Taylor delivered one of the meet's closest finishes, leaning at the line to take second in the 800 by just 0.04 seconds. The race also produced a significant personal record for Taylor, giving Bay an immediate highlight to start the spring. Ray added another standout distance result with a second-place finish in the 1,600, narrowly missing a personal best in his season debut.
Bay also got a productive night from several sprinters and hurdlers. Will Curran placed third in the 200 and later helped power the Rockets to the win in the 4x200 relay. Ben Kamm set an early tone with a demanding triple, finishing fourth in the 100 before returning for both the 4x200 and 4x100 relays. Jack Downing was fourth in the 110 hurdles, while Max Fischer took fourth in the 300 hurdles. Liam Jager contributed a third-place finish in the 400 after also running on the 4x800 relay.
The winning 4x200 team of Curran, Kamm, Fischer and Jayden Perrine gave Bay one of its biggest performances of the night. The group showed both speed and depth in an event that could become a major strength as the season develops. Earlier in the meet, Gavin English made an impressive first high school showing, running a strong leg on the 4x800 before returning late to post a 10:41.62 in the 3,200. It was a notable debut for the freshman in his first attempt at the event.
In the field events, freshman Logan Bigrigg continued Bay's strong start by clearing 11 feet to place third in the pole vault. Braeden Egan added another third-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 43 feet, 11.5 inches. Lute Harmon opened his season by clearing 5-8 in the high jump for fifth place, and Avery Banks scored additional team points with a sixth-place finish in the long jump.
Taken together, the performances gave the Rockets a solid opening-night foundation and points across the track and field lineup. For an early April meet, Bay showed balance in the sprints, distance races, hurdles, relays and field events, with Taylor's near-photo-finish in the 800 and the 4x200 victory standing out as the biggest moments of a third-place team effort.
