Bay Girls Basketball used a dominant third quarter and a perfect night at the free-throw line to pull away from Westlake for a 53-34 victory in girls varsity basketball Tuesday night at Bay High School. The Rockets, who finished 12-for-12 from the line and forced 17 steals, secured their first season with 10 or more conference wins since the 2015-16 campaign.
Bay established control early, edging in front 13-9 after the first quarter behind active defense and balanced scoring. The Rockets extended the margin to 28-19 by halftime, steadily building a cushion as their pressure forced Westlake into turnovers and limited clean looks at the basket.
The decisive stretch came in the third quarter, when Bay essentially put the game out of reach. The Rockets outscored Westlake 16-2 in the frame, turning steals into transition opportunities and capitalizing at the free-throw line. That surge pushed the lead well into double digits, allowing Bay to manage the tempo the rest of the way and close out the win in the fourth quarter.
Madelyn Lee led the Rockets’ offense and set the tone defensively, finishing with a game-high 20 points to go with six steals and two assists. Her play on the perimeter was a key part of Bay’s 17-steal effort, repeatedly disrupting Westlake’s ballhandlers and sparking fast-break chances.
Bay also received significant production on the glass and in the paint. Chloe Kazma posted 8 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks, anchoring the interior on both ends. Caroline Chilton added 4 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals, while Anna Spellman contributed 7 points and 6 rebounds as the Rockets controlled the boards and limited Westlake to one shot on many possessions.
Depth scoring and defensive activity rounded out the performance. Norah Trefz chipped in 8 points, and Anna Weingart finished with 6 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals, helping maintain the defensive pressure that defined the night. With the win, the Rockets not only secured a decisive conference victory but also marked an important milestone season for the program, reaching double-digit conference wins for the first time in nearly a decade.
