The Bay Varsity Girls Basketball team used a dominant second half and a buzzer-beating heave to secure a 52-34 road win over North Olmsted on Saturday at North Olmsted High School.
The Rockets established control early, building a 14-8 lead after the first quarter behind steady half-court offense and active work on the glass. The second quarter turned into a back-and-forth stretch, with North Olmsted answering Bay’s early punches to keep the margin within two possessions for most of the frame.
The decisive moment of the night came at the end of that second quarter. With time expiring, Anna Weingart stepped into a three-quarter-court heave and buried it, giving Bay a 27-21 halftime lead. The shot was not only a momentum swing heading into the locker room but also marked Weingart’s first career 3-pointer, punctuating a 13-point second quarter for the Rockets that helped create separation.
Bay carried that momentum into the third quarter, tightening up defensively while balancing its scoring attack. The Rockets outscored North Olmsted 14-8 in the third to extend the lead to double digits and followed with an 11-5 advantage in the fourth, closing out the game by limiting clean looks and finishing possessions with rebounds.
Offensively, Chloe Kazma led Bay with 13 points and 4 rebounds, providing consistent scoring throughout the afternoon. Madelyn Lee added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, mixing perimeter play with work on the boards. Weingart finished with 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 steals, impacting the game on both ends in addition to her halftime buzzer-beater.
The Rockets’ balance extended beyond the scoring column. In her first game back from knee surgery, Sarah Hein contributed 5 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals, giving Bay an emotional and tangible boost in the rotation. Caroline Chilton anchored the interior with 4 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals, while Molly Rettig added 5 rebounds and supplied a strong defensive effort that helped hold North Olmsted to just 13 second-half points.
With the win, Bay showed its ability to close out a road game by stringing together stops and converting key possessions, using depth and defensive pressure to gradually pull away over the final two quarters.
