Bay Rockets Boys Basketball went toe-to-toe with the top team in the Cleveland West Conference on Saturday night, but the Rockets came up just short in a 43-40 loss at Lakewood despite having two chances to tie or win in the final 30 seconds.

In a physical, back-and-forth game at Lakewood High School, the Rockets set the tone early and led 14-13 after the first quarter. Bay’s defense was active from the opening tip, forcing tough shots and limiting second-chance opportunities to grab the early edge on the road. Ryan Miller provided much of the scoring punch in the opening stretches, helping the Rockets match the Rangers’ energy and keep the pace controlled.

Lakewood responded in the second quarter, tightening its defense and holding Bay to just three points in the frame to take a 21-17 lead into halftime. Possessions grew longer and cleaner looks were harder to find as the Rangers worked to take away the Rockets’ perimeter rhythm. Even with the offensive lull, Bay stayed within striking distance by continuing to battle on the glass and limiting the Rangers’ transition opportunities.

The Rockets regrouped after the break and turned the third quarter into another tight, low-scoring battle. Bay outscored Lakewood 14-11 in the frame, trimming the deficit to a single point at 32-31 heading into the fourth quarter. Miller remained a steady scoring option, while players like Kelan Rose contributed key baskets to keep the Rockets within one possession of the conference leaders as the game moved into its decisive moments.

The fourth quarter unfolded much like the rest of the night—possession by possession. Bay’s defense kept the Rangers from pulling away, and the Rockets’ work on the boards remained a strength. Jack Bly anchored that effort with a game-high nine rebounds, helping limit Lakewood’s second chances. Brody Beggs added five rebounds and three assists, facilitating the offense and helping create quality looks as Bay tried to close the gap down the stretch.

Trailing by a narrow margin in the final minute, Bay played itself into two critical possessions in the last 30 seconds with opportunities to tie or even take the lead. The Rockets worked to create chances, but the shots would not fall, and Lakewood held on to escape with the 43-40 victory. Despite the result, Bay’s ability to push the Cleveland West Conference’s top team to the wire on the road underscored the Rockets’ growth and competitiveness as they head into the closing stretch of their schedule.

Miller finished with a team-high 20 points for Bay, knocking down four of six attempts from 3-point range and going a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line. Rose added eight points with timely scoring, while Bly’s nine rebounds and Beggs’ all-around line of five rebounds and three assists highlighted the Rockets’ balance and effort. Emmitt Naughton and Ethan George both had critical steals to set up offensive opportunities in the 3rd and 4th quarter. The performance offered a strong benchmark as Bay looks to build on a narrow loss against the league’s top seed. The Rockets will travel to Avon to play the host Eagles on Tuesday, February 17th.
