Bay Rockets Girls Basketball Surges Late to Defeat Buckeye 55-45 on the Road

A dominant fourth-quarter surge lifted Bay Girls Basketball to a 55-45 road victory over Buckeye on Thursday night at Buckeye High School, powered by a career night from Freshman standout Chloe Kazma.

Bay opened strongly, controlling the tempo and defensive glass to take a 10-5 lead after the first quarter. Buckeye answered in the second, using a late push capped by a buzzer-beating jumper to grab a 24-22 advantage at halftime. The hosts extended that momentum early in the third quarter, building a 31-22 lead by the midway point of the frame before the Rockets began to chip away.

The game pivoted in the second half on Bay’s hustle and defensive pressure. Trailing 37-33 entering the fourth quarter, the Rockets ramped up intensity, sparked by multiple hustle plays from Molly Rettig and Norah Trefz that turned loose balls and defensive stops into transition chances. Bay outscored Buckeye 22-8 in the final quarter, repeatedly stringing together stops and scores to take control down the stretch.

Kazma delivered the decisive sequence late in the fourth. With 3:47 remaining, she tied the game at 39-39, then on the next possession drove to the basket, finished through contact and converted the three-point play to give Bay the lead for good. As Buckeye struggled to generate clean looks against the Rockets’ half-court defense, Bay continued to find answers on the offensive end. A late 3-pointer by Madelyn Lee helped the Rockets create separation and effectively put the game out of reach.

Kazma anchored the performance with another career high, posting 30 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks to lead Bay on both ends of the floor. Trefz added eight points, three rebounds and two assists, contributing key plays during the second-half comeback. Anna Spellman provided balance with seven points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists, giving the Rockets a steady presence on the perimeter.

Bay’s ball movement and rebounding were critical in the closing stretch. Point guard Anna Weingart orchestrated the offense with 10 assists to go with six rebounds and two steals, consistently setting up teammates for quality looks. Lee finished with five points, nine rebounds and three assists, while Caroline Chilton anchored the interior defense with two points, five rebounds and an impactful seven blocks that disrupted Buckeye’s attempts to score in the paint.

With the win, Bay showed resilience in overcoming a nine-point third-quarter deficit and demonstrated its ability to close out a tight game on the road. The Rockets’ combination of interior defense, rebounding and timely scoring in the fourth quarter underscored a complete team effort built around Kazma’s standout performance.
