Bay Track & Field's Maya Gonzalez Earns All-Ohio Honors with Distance Double!
Freshman Maya Gonzalez, representing the Lady Rockets on the biggest track and field stage there is, the OHSAA Jesse Owens Track & Field State Championships, had yet another fantastic weekend, earning All-Ohio honors in both the 1600m and 800m Run!Â
On the hottest day of the season thus far, Maya competed in two events, leading off with the 1600m Run. Among the pack leaders for the first two laps, Maya and the lead runner then pulled away from the pack with 600 meters remaining, both trading leads as they sprinted down the backstretch with but half a second between them. When the freshman crossed the finish line, May, for the sixth time this season, broke her own school record in the event, posting a runner-up 4:54.91 finish! Making the feat all the more impressive is that had Maya competed in the Division 1 race, her time was strong enough that it would have earned her a 5th place spot on the Division 1 podium!
Just 50 minutes later Maya returned to compete in the 800m Run, one of three girls to attempt the distance double. Once again Maya got out strong, finishing the first lap in the top six before moving up the next 200 meters to be in the top four. From there, despite the leaders pulling away, Maya held strong, holding off the pack behind her to narrowly miss breaking yet another one of her own records to finish 4th overall!
When all was said and done as the season wound down, Maya ended up setting two school records and, thanks to her performance during the postseason, became just the 33rd individual from the BHS girls program to qualify to the State meet, earning a BHS best ever 1600 and 800 finish! Congratulations Maya on a fantastic season!
