BHS Girls Track and Field Competes at Rocky River Invitational

Travis Haselswerdt | Bay High School | May 10, 2025

On May 9, 2025, the Bay High School girls track and field team participated at the Rocky River Bell Invitational, competing against schools such as Avon Lake, Lakewood, Westlake, and host Rocky River. The Rockets took 7th place on a sunny but solemn day. The team, voting to compete in the event to help remember and recognize a recently departed member of the Bay Village community, sophomore Dylan Veselic, adorned ribbons with Dylan's Lacrosse number and, after a moment of silence throughout the stadium to honor his memory, did their very best to perform both on the track and in the field on this somber, but significant, day. In the sprints, sophomore Annie Willmitch led the field with a first-place finish in the 100 meters while in the same event, freshman Alex Linsenmeyer claimed the 8th spot. Sophomore Ruby Render and junior Anne Weber made significant strides in the 400 meters and the 1600 meters, securing 5th and 7th places respectively, while Erin Belveal also took 8th in the 1600 meters. In hurdle events, sophomores Mckenna Adkins and Ainsley Schneid performed admirably in the 300 meters hurdles, finishing 5th and 7th. In the relays, the 4x100m team of sophomores Jaiden Latimer-Smith, Mckenna, Birdie Kreuger, and Annie took 3rd place while in the 4x200m relay, the group of Jaiden, Alex, Annie, and Ruby, finished 2nd. Meanwhile, the 4x800m relay team composed of Anne and seniors Hannah Starnes, Brooklyn Marriott, and Erin secured a 5th place finish. In field events, senior Keira Jansen and junior Riley Mitchell highlighted their skills with Keira taking 6th in the Long Jump and Riley securing 7th in the Discus and 4th in the Shot Put. Reflecting on the team's performance, Coach Haselswerdt said, "I couldn't be more proud of how the girls responded in light of recent events. Their actions since Dylan's passing illustrate what a empathetic and compassionate group of young ladies this team - and this community - has representing them; they're just a fantastic group of young ladies. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dylan and his family during this incredibly difficult time."
