BAY_VILLAGE, Ohio - Maya Gonzalez won the individual title in 18:18 as Bay High School’s varsity girls cross country team finished fourth among 21 teams with 157 points in the Girls Division II District race Saturday, October 24. The result qualified the Rockets for the Boardman Regional.
Gonzalez used a tactical race to record a personal-best time on the district course, giving Bay the first finisher in the field. Anika Schulz followed as the Rockets’ second runner, placing 15th in 20:01. Those two top-15 finishes anchored a scoring group that put all five runners among the top 55.
Kai Ripley finished 32nd in 20:36 before Elyse Edelman and Clare Messmore supplied a closely grouped finish to complete Bay’s scoring five. Edelman took 54th and Messmore placed 55th, both clocking 21:22. Their consecutive places limited the gap between the Rockets’ fourth and fifth scorers. Ainsley Scheid finished 73rd, while Nolie Piktel placed 80th in 22:03.
The team standings were tight around the final podium position. CVCA won with 104 points, followed by Avon with 115 and Cleveland St. Joe’s with 155, just two points ahead of Bay. The Rockets finished 15 points ahead of fifth-place Westlake, which scored 172, while Brecksville was sixth with 173.
Revere placed seventh with 184 points, followed by Medina Highland with 237, Amherst Steele with 249 and Avon Lake with 271. Rocky River finished 11th with 277, and Cloverleaf rounded out the top 12 with 289. The Rockets race next at the Boardman Regional on Saturday, October 31.
