BAY_VILLAGE, Ohio - Bay Girls finished second with 49 points in the girls varsity race at the Cleveland West Championship on Saturday, Oct. 17, in Medina. Maya Gonzalez led the Rockets with an individual championship, finishing first in 18:29.

Westlake won the varsity team title with 32 points, finishing 17 points ahead of Bay. Rocky River placed third with 81 points, followed by Lakewood with 116 and Normandy with 127. The Rockets placed all five scoring runners among the top 15, with four crossing the finish line between eighth and 15th.

Anika Schulz finished eighth in 20:14 to lead that closely grouped quartet. Clare Messmore took 10th in 20:27, Kai Ripley placed 12th in 20:33 and Elyse Edelman finished 15th in 20:44. Just 30 seconds separated Bay's second and fifth runners, limiting the gaps behind Gonzalez and completing the Rockets' 49-point scoring total.

This was a great team effort despite several athletes receiving from the flu. There was a 30 second gap between our 2nd and 5th runners.

Nolie Piktel followed in 23rd place at 21:28, while Ainsley Scheid finished 25th in 21:39. Elyse Mull placed 31st in 22:01. Gonzalez and Schulz earned CWC First Team honors. Messmore, Ripley and Edelman earned CWC Second Team honors, while Piktel and Scheid received CWC Honorable Mention, giving Bay seven runners recognized across the three honor groups.

Bay also claimed the Open team championship with 24 points, led by overall winner Lily Ławnicki, who finished in 21:54. The Rockets finished 25 points ahead of runner-up Westlake, which scored 49. Rocky River took third with 77 points and Lakewood finished fourth with 84.
