Bay Boys Track & Field finished sixth out of 17 teams Friday at the 48th Avon Invitational, scoring 44 points against a deep field of top programs in Avon. Avon won the meet with 137 points, followed by Solon with 87, Steele with 55, Olmsted Falls with 51.5 and GlenOak with 45.5, just ahead of the Rockets.
The headline performance belonged to Jayden Perrine, who turned in one of the meet’s most impressive efforts despite cold, rainy conditions. Perrine completed a rare sprint Triple Crown by winning the 100-meter dash, 400 and 200. He opened with a 10.73 in the 100, missing the 48-year-old meet record by one hundredth of a second. He later ran a personal-best 49.69 to win the 400, narrowly missing Bay’s school record of 49.46, then closed the day with a 21.83 in the 200, finishing just .11 off his own meet record from last season. None of the three races was particularly close.
Max Fischer also delivered a strong scoring day in the hurdles, placing fifth in both the 110-meter hurdles and 300 hurdles while posting personal-best times in each race to account for eight team points. Jackson Smith added three more with a sixth-place finish in the high jump after clearing 6 feet again earlier in the week. In the distance events, Stephen Murphy continued his strong spring by recording two more personal records in the demanding 1,600-3,200 double. Murphy ran 4:52.48 in the 1,600, then returned later to clock 10:07.83 in the 3,200 and take eighth place for a point.
Bay also found points in the middle-distance races and relays. The 4x800 relay team of Adrian Ray, James Greenleaf, Mikey Taylor and Gavin English finished eighth in a loaded field, with Ray and English both recording personal records in the 800 during the effort. Taylor came back hours later to produce another personal best, running 2:03.23 in the open 800 and surging over the final 100 meters to grab eighth place and another point. Kieran Ripley made his season debut in the 800 and ran a strong 2:04.83 in a highly competitive heat.
In the field events, Braeden Egan placed ninth in both the discus and shot put, while Danny Zipfel also turned in a solid day in the throws against what Bay described as one of the invitational’s toughest groups. Will Curran posted a personal-best 23.26 in the 200, winning his heat out of lane 7, and Ben Kamm was just .01 away from taking his 100 heat after a strong closing stretch. The 4x200 relay of Evan Taulbee, Colin McAlea, Fischer and Curran, along with the 4x100 team of Taulbee, McAlea, Kamm and Jack Downing, ran well in difficult conditions despite some lineup adjustments. Avery Banks and Oliver Marotta competed in the long jump, while Logan Bigrigg and Cole Aslasken battled through the weather in the pole vault.
For Bay, the finish reflected both immediate production and steady progress. Perrine’s three wins set the tone, but the Rockets also saw personal records from Murphy, Fischer, Ray, English and Taylor in a meet that tested athletes with both weather and competition. In a field loaded with larger programs and high-level talent, Bay left Avon with a sixth-place finish and several performances that suggested more could be coming as the season continues.
