Perrine, Relays lead Bay Track & Field at 70th Annual Comet Relays

Bay Boys Track & Field turned in a strong showing against one of the area’s deepest fields Saturday at the 70th Annual Comet Relays in Amherst, with Jayden Perrine leading the Rockets through a full day of high-level competition. Perrine delivered the team’s top result with a dominant victory in the 100 meters, and Bay added points across the track and field events with key relay finishes, a solid day in the hurdles and several notable individual efforts.

Perrine’s sprint win stood out in a loaded race. According to team notes, five runners in the field had previously broken 11 seconds in the 100, setting up one of the meet’s marquee events. Perrine removed any suspense, pulling away for a convincing victory against that elite competition. He also helped power Bay’s top relay groups, teaming with Will Curran, Ben Kamm and Max Fischer on the 4x200 relay that finished seventh overall out of the second heat. The same quartet closed the meet with one of the Rockets’ best efforts of the day, taking fifth in the 4x400 in 3:29.03 while beating several teams entered in the fast heat.

Fischer was one of Bay’s busiest contributors. In addition to his relay legs in the 4x200 and 4x400, he placed ninth in both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, competing against many of the top hurdlers in the area. Liam Jager added another track highlight for the Rockets, finishing eighth in the 1,600 meters in 4:44 despite coming off several demanding weeks of training. Stephen Murphy continued his strong senior season in the 3,200, recording another personal record as Bay collected more momentum in the distance events.

Bay also found points in the field. The high jump relay team of Jackson Smith, Lute Harmon and Charlie Juratic took seventh after waiting through difficult conditions for most of the meet before competing late. The discus relay of Danny Zipfel, Braeden Egan and Ethan McCready finished sixth overall, a result that carried extra weight given the strength of the throws field at Comet. In the pole vault, freshmen Logan Bigrigg, Ryan Connors and Cole Aslasken gained valuable experience in a highly competitive event, while Avery Banks, Patrick Marotta and Ben Rickson also added field-event work for the Rockets. Braeden Egan, Andrew Egan and Zipfel competed in the shot put as well.

Several relay groups continued to build depth for Bay. The 4x100 and sprint medley relay units featuring Evan Taulbee, Ben Kamm, Colin McAlea, Nick Cebulis, Jack Downing and Mikey Taylor showed continued improvement. The 4x1600 team of Adrian Ray, Dan Buttrick, Carver Vovos and Gerry Maloney gained experience, with Ray also joining the sub-5-minute club. Bay’s 4x800 group of Ray, Taylor, Juratic and Graham Dunstan also ran in strong company and added to the day’s workload.

With clear skies and warm conditions in Amherst, the Rockets used the long meet as both a measuring stick and an opportunity to test themselves against top programs. Bay did that repeatedly, from Perrine’s statement win in the 100 to a closing 4x400 that capped the day with one of the team’s best finishes.
