Rockets Beat Wellington by 11 Strokes in Storm-Shortened Match

Bay High School’s Rockets defeated Wellington by 11 strokes Thursday in a rain- and storm-shortened girls golf match at Echo Valley Golf Course. Lydia Oldham led the Rockets at 4 over through three holes before severe weather halted play and forced the match to be completed with adjusted scoring.

The match began at 4:30 p.m. in hot conditions, with the temperature at 88 degrees under initially clear skies. The weather changed quickly as severe storms moved through the area, preventing the players from completing their remaining holes. Each unfinished hole was scored at double par to produce the final team results.

Before play was stopped, Ella Taulbee stood at 9 over through four holes and Katherine Bowler was 11 over through four. Caroline Kousaie had completed the most holes among The Rockets golfers, reaching six holes at 14 over. Those early scores, led by Lydia Oldham’s steady opening stretch, gave Bay enough of an advantage to withstand the double-par additions.

Scoring was difficult for both teams at Echo Valley, one of the most challenging courses on the Rockets’ schedule this season. The demanding layout combined with the heat and rapidly changing weather to push scores higher, while the shortened format placed additional importance on the holes each golfer completed before the suspension.

Even after the unfinished holes were added at double par, Bay maintained an 11-stroke margin over Wellington. The victory moved the Rockets to 5-5 in dual matches this season, bringing them back to .500 after navigating one of their most unusual and difficult matches of the schedule.
