Bay Girls Basketball closed its regular-season home schedule with a decisive fourth-quarter surge, pulling away from Fairview for a 51-42 victory on Senior Night in Bay Village on Wednesday.
In a game that stayed tight for three quarters, the Rockets entered the fourth tied 34-34 before dominating the final eight minutes 17-8 to seal the win. Bay led 13-11 after the first quarter and took a 23-20 advantage into halftime after senior captain Ainsley Lesh drove the lane for a layup with four seconds remaining in the second quarter, giving the Rockets a key momentum boost heading into the break.
Fairview battled back in the third quarter, erasing Bay’s lead and setting up a tense finish. With the Rockets trailing late in the period, Anna Weingart delivered another clutch moment, knocking down a buzzer-beating jumper from inside the arc to tie the game at 34 heading into the fourth. The shot marked her second buzzer beater this season and helped stabilize Bay before its closing run.
From there, the Rockets controlled the final quarter on both ends of the floor. Bay outscored Fairview 17-8 in the fourth, combining timely scoring with active defense to create separation for the first time all night. The defense forced turnovers and limited second-chance opportunities, allowing the Rockets to turn stops into transition chances and half-court execution as they put the game away.
Chloe Kazma led Bay with 15 points and 9 rebounds, providing consistent interior scoring and a strong presence on the glass. Norah Trefz added 13 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals, impacting the game as both a playmaker and defensive disruptor in the backcourt. Madelyn Lee chipped in 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists, giving the Rockets another reliable scoring option.
Weingart’s all-around performance matched her late-game heroics, as she finished with 5 points, 5 rebounds, 6 steals and 2 assists, repeatedly jumping passing lanes to fuel the Rockets’ transition game. Caroline Chilton anchored the interior defensively with 5 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks, while Lesh contributed 2 points, 3 rebounds and a steal, highlighted by her late-first-half layup. Together, the group helped Bay close its final regular-season home game on a high note.
The Rockets now turn their attention to the postseason, as they prepare to host the Beaumont Blue Streaks in the first round of the OHSAA playoffs. Coming off a resilient, back-and-forth win on Senior Night, Bay enters the tournament with momentum and a demonstrated ability to finish close games in the fourth quarter.
