Avon Lake, Ohio - Bay High School’s Rockets delivered under pressure Tuesday, edging the Westlake Demons 153-155 in a varsity boys golf dual match at the Briar-Patch. Only two strokes separated the teams after a contest that remained tight through the final holes, with Bay’s experienced lineup producing the steady closing play needed to secure the victory.
Mileti led Bay with a 36, followed by Naughton’s 37, Skryp’s 38 and Berry’s 42. Those four counting scores produced the Rockets’ team total of 153. Ropelewski added a 43, while Vardon recorded a 47 in his first varsity start. Westlake finished at 155 despite a match-low 33 from senior Peyton Wolf.
The senior leadership of Bay helped Bay withstand Westlake’s challenge. Matthew Mileti put a full range of shots on display while firing an impressive 36. Mileti was 1 under par entering the eighth hole after making birdies at Nos. 3 and 5, capitalizing on scoring opportunities that set the tone for the Rockets.
Consistency also proved important. Emmitt Naughton made six pars on the way to a 37, and Naughton supplied steady play in a match in which every stroke carried added weight. Ryan Skryp closed especially well, playing the final three holes in 1 under par to finish with a 38 and help Bay preserve its narrow advantage.
The Rockets also received a resilient round from freshman Matthew Berry, who carded a 42. After a triple bogey on the par-3 sixth hole, Berry responded with consecutive pars on the next two holes and finished the round strongly. Vardon’s varsity debut provided another positive development, giving the newcomer experience against a Westlake lineup capable of producing low scores.
The match began at 3:30 a.m. under mainly clear skies with a temperature of 85 degrees and winds at 13 mph. In those warm conditions, Bay combined timely birdies, stretches of steady par golf and strong finishes to overcome Peyton Wolf’s 33. With the margin down to two strokes, the Rockets’ closing execution made the difference.
