Rockets Place Sixth at Cardinal Invitational
Bay Village Boys XC delivered another strong team race Saturday, placing sixth among 19 teams at the Cardinal Invitational in Middlefield. Gavin English led the Rockets with a time of 16:49.9, while Liam Jager crossed just behind in 16:52.1, only one second off his personal record. Adrian Ray added a 17:28.7 finish, coming within four seconds of his PR as Bay put two runners under 17 minutes and three under 17:30.
The Rockets’ success stretched throughout the lineup, with 14 of the team’s 23 runners recording new personal records and several others finishing within seconds of their best marks. Bay’s runners continued to make progress by staying aggressive through the middle mile.
Behind the leading trio, Sam McClellan finished in 18:08.9 and Carver Vovos recorded an 18:23.3. Micah Bendoraitis followed in 18:39.5, with Joe Kubiak close behind at 18:47.5. Adam Baltz completed the course in 18:52.8, and Liam Loeffler gave the Rockets another sub-20-minute varsity performance at 19:00.4. The depth across that group helped Bay secure its top-six team finish against a 19-team field.
Bay’s pack running was especially visible in the open race. James Greenleaf led the group in 18:43.3, followed by a strong pack of Dan Buttrick in 19:23.4, Mason Shah in 19:23.9, Graham Dunstan in 19:24.0, Freddie Steele in 19:25.1 and Anton Bekeny in 19:28.3. Less than five seconds separated those five runners, giving the Rockets a strong example of teammates working together through the course. Bekeny also finished only three seconds away from a personal record.
The open group’s depth continued with Max Clevenger in 19:43.4 and Leo Krueger in 19:43.6, followed by Jonah Bendoraitis in 19:54.9 and Athan Thanos in 19:59.9. Eli Belveal finished in 21:20.2, Lukas McGrew posted a 21:28.7, Gerry Maloney ran 21:35.7 and Gavin Fry completed the race in 22:37.3. Clear skies and a temperature of 68 degrees greeted the field, and Bay made the most of the favorable conditions with personal progress throughout the roster.
The sixth-place finish, 14 personal records and several near-PR efforts gave the Rockets plenty to celebrate while reinforcing the value of their middle-mile strategy.
