Rockets Boys Basketball Pushes Pirates to the Brink: Bay Falls 51-50 in Instant Rivalry Classic

Bay Boys Basketball pushed rival Rocky River to the final buzzer Friday night, falling 51-50 in a Cleveland West Conference matchup that came down to the last possession in the second game of a varsity doubleheader at Bay High School.

The Rockets trailed 15-10 after the first quarter but clawed back with a 17-12 surge in the second, sending the game into halftime tied at 27-27. Rocky River inched back in front in the third quarter, taking a 42-39 lead into the fourth. From there, the rivalry contest turned into a series of pressure possessions, defensive stops and clutch free throws that kept the outcome in doubt until the final horn.

Freshman guard Josh Cseh delivered one of the key sparks of the night early in the fourth quarter. A quick steal which led directly to a layup, energizing the Rockets’ comeback effort and cut their rivals lead to 1. After a Pirate miss, Bay regained the lead at the 5:54 mark when Emmitt Naughton calmly sank two free throws. Following a Rocky River basket, Naughton answered again from the line, giving the Rockets a 45-44 advantage with 4:53 left in the game.

Rocky River responded to move back in front in the closing minutes, and Bay was forced to foul in the final 90 seconds. With the Rockets trailing by six in the final minute, Naughton found Kelan Rose on the perimeter, and Rose buried a pivotal 3-pointer with 36 seconds remaining to trim the Pirates’ lead to three. On the ensuing full-court press, Rose jumped the inbounds pass and came up with a steal, giving Bay possession and a chance to tie the game on the final trip.

Out of the late-game opportunity, Bay worked for a 3-point look that would have evened the score but were unable to get a shot behind the arc as time expired, sealing a one-point decision for Rocky River.

Naughton led Bay with 18 points, including multiple key trips to the free-throw line in the fourth quarter that either tied the score or briefly put the Rockets ahead. Ryan Miller added 13 points, providing steady scoring throughout the night, while Rose finished with 12 points, capped by his late 3-pointer and critical defensive play on the press. Cseh’s steal-and-score marked his first field goal of his varsity career, coming on the heels of his first varsity points earlier in the week, underscoring the freshman’s emerging role in the rotation.

The 51-50 final reflected how tight the game was from start to finish, with both teams trading runs and answering key baskets. For the Rockets, the performance featured balanced scoring, contributions from upperclassmen and underclassmen alike, and a strong response after an early deficit. Bay will look to build on the effort and late-game execution as it hosts another rival, the Westlake Demons this Tuesday, February 3rd, at Bay High School.
