Rockets Push Rocky River in Third Set Before 3-0 Defeat

Bay High School found its strongest rhythm late Thursday, but Rocky River completed a three-set victory over the Rockets, 25-13, 25-14, 25-22, at Rocky River. The Rockets improved their point total in each set and challenged the hosts throughout a competitive third set before falling 3-0.
Rocky River established the early advantage by taking the opening set 25-13. Bay continued working to generate points from the service line in the second set, but the hosts maintained control and earned a 25-14 win to take a two-set lead in the match.
The Rockets responded with their best set of the afternoon. After being held below 15 points in each of the first two sets, Bay stayed within reach during the third and pushed Rocky River to the closing points. The Rockets scored 22 points, nine more than in the opener, before the hosts secured the set and match with a 25-22 decision.
Payton Masterson led Bay's service production with seven points. Amelia Vecchio and Kendall Hoerig each recorded four service points, while Camille Costin added three and Addyson Hoegler finished with two. Sloane Kerber , Andy Naughton and Lila Gilmore contributed one service point apiece, giving the Rockets seven players with at least one point from the service line.
Although Bay was unable to extend the match, the third-set response provided a clear positive. The Rockets narrowed the set margin from 12 points in the opener and 11 in the second set to only three in the finale, showing steadier play as the match progressed.
Bay returns home to face Lakewood at Bay High School on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, at 6 p.m. EDT.
