ROCKETS RISE TO THE CHALLENGE AND ADVANCE TO DISTRICTS!

The Bay High Rockets delivered a gritty, determined performance at the Division II Sectional Golf Tournament at Pine Hills, earning a spot in next week's District Tournament and keeping their pursuit of a State Championship appearance alive!

Competing in a talented field of 15 teams, with only the top three advancing to districts, the Rockets faced challenging conditions from start to finish. Persistent moisture left the course saturated, chilly temperatures tested the players' patience, and swirling winds made club selection and shot execution difficult. The course played long, and the inconsistent green speeds created another layer of difficulty. However, the Rockets embraced the challenge, remained composed, and delivered a total team score of 335 to secure their advancement.

This was a complete team effort, highlighted by resilience, smart decision-making, and the ability to respond when adversity struck.

Senior co-captain Emmitt Naughton led the Rockets with an outstanding round of 79, grinding out pars and managing the challenging conditions with poise and precision. Emmitt kept the ball in play, executed quality iron shots, and navigated the difficult greens with tremendous discipline.

His performance was on full display on the opening hole when he nearly holed out from the fairway, leaving his approach just inches from the cup for what would have been a spectacular start. Emmitt's ability to stay patient, minimize mistakes, and compete for every shot resulted in one of the tournament's lowest individual rounds.

A true captain's performance when his team needed it most!

Senior co-captain Matthew Mileti opened his round in impressive fashion, sinking a two-putt birdie on the par-five opening hole. However, the round soon presented challenges, as adversity and difficult swing thoughts led to a difficult stretch from holes 4–12, where he played 11 over par.

What happened next was a powerful example of competitive resilience.

In a proud coach moment, Matthew dug deep, reset his mindset, and finished the final six holes at just +1 over par. His ability to overcome frustration, regain his focus, and finish strong demonstrated the heart, determination, and competitive spirit that define him.

Golf will test every player. Matthew's response to adversity was a reminder that the round is never over until the final putt drops.

In team golf, four scores are required, and junior Blake Ropelewski stepped up when the Rockets needed him most, posting a valuable 86.

Blake's on-course composure was exceptional. He managed his game, trusted his decisions, and showcased impressive shot creativity throughout the round. His ability to execute clutch punch shots, escape trouble, and position himself for favorable scoring opportunities played a significant role in his performance.

Blake's continued maturation as a competitor was on full display. He demonstrated the patience, creativity, and confidence necessary to navigate a demanding tournament environment.

A tremendous contribution from a Rocket who continues to grow!

Senior Will Schrock anchored the Rockets with an important 87, securing the fourth score needed to advance the team to districts.

Will's consistent ball striking and excellent lag putting were instrumental in his round. He competed with confidence, managed the challenging conditions, and stayed committed to his game plan. Beyond his performance on the course, Will's positivity and steady presence continue to make a difference for this team.

He keeps the fellas even-keeled, smiling, and focused, even when the conditions become difficult. That kind of leadership is invaluable during postseason competition.

The Rockets have earned their opportunity. Next week, Bay High will compete at Windmill Lakes Golf Course, with a trip to the OHSAA State Championship on the line.

The challenge will be significant, and the competition will be fierce. But this group has demonstrated the ability to battle through adversity, support one another, and compete with confidence when the stakes are highest.
