Rockets Show Progress at Wooster XC Invitational

Bay High School continued its encouraging rise Saturday at the Wooster XC Invitational, where 14 of the Rockets’ 22 runners recorded personal-best times. Liam Jager led the varsity effort in 17 minutes, 5.36 seconds, followed by Adrian Ray in 17:37.14 and Gavin English in 17:56.22. Their strong finishes set the tone for a deep performance.
The front-running trio of Jager, Ray and English battled through the course and finished with purpose. Just as importantly, the Rockets showed improvement through the middle portion of the race, an area the team has emphasized during three productive weeks of training. Better positioning and sustained effort helped Bay carry momentum into the closing stretch rather than allowing the pace to slip.
Bay’s varsity depth added plenty to celebrate. Sam McClellan finished in 18:12.34, Joe Kubiak crossed in 18:18.96 and Dan Buttrick posted a 19:10.92. Adam Baltz was close behind in 19:11.52, followed by Micah Bendoraitis in 19:15.76 and Liam Loeffler in 19:16.30. Mason Shah completed the listed varsity results with a time of 19:46.02. From the fourth runner through the rest of the group, the Rockets continued to close gaps and demonstrate steady week-to-week progress.
The open race brought another strong display of pack running. Carver Vovos paced Bay’s open competitors in 18:47.96, while Anton Bekeny finished in 19:25.88 and Jack Marcuse recorded a 19:38.36. Freddie Steele broke 20 minutes with a 19:54.07, and Graham Dunstan followed in 20:04.32. Max Clevenger ran 20:12.88, Aidan Hays posted a 20:15.72 and Athan Thanos finished in 20:31.20.
Jonah Bendoraitis crossed in 21:31.34, Gerry Maloney finished in 21:37.38, Aden Davis recorded a 22:23.32 and Lukas McGrew posted a 22:30.92. Together, the varsity and open results reflected a team becoming more comfortable racing in groups, working through difficult middle miles and maintaining its form late. With nearly two-thirds of the lineup setting personal records, Bay left Wooster with tangible evidence that its training is producing results.
The Rockets will sharpen their work this week before returning to competition at the home Cardinal Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 19, at noon EDT. Bay will look to build on its improving pack, the front group’s finishing strength and a memorable day of personal records.
