Rockets Show Resilience at St. Edward’s Varsity Shoot-Out

The Bay Village boys golf team posted a four-player score of 371 while competing against a varsity field Thursday in the St. Edward Varsity Shoot-Out at Big Met Golf Course in Fairview Park. Deloy Johnson led the young lineup with an 86, the best round of his Rockets career, while Max Berry added a 91 in a resilient response to a difficult start.
Deloy Johnson, listed with the Soph designation, set the scoring pace for Bay. Deloy consistently found fairways off the tee and hit several quality iron shots into the greens. Smart decisions and a disciplined approach helped Deloy maintain confidence throughout the round as the Rockets adjusted to the varsity-level competition.
Freshman Max Berry supplied one of the round’s strongest recoveries. Max began with scores of 8, 7 and 6 and stood 11 over par through four holes, but the early trouble did not dictate the rest of the day. Max played the final 14 holes in 4 over par and made two birdies on the inward nine, demonstrating the ability to reset and remain composed after a demanding opening stretch.
Sophomore Sam Vardon finished with a 95 after also overcoming a slow start. Sam found more consistency with the driver as the round progressed, building confidence and settling into a better rhythm off the tee. Several mistakes around the greens kept the score from dropping into the 80s, but the stronger finish offered another sign of progress.
Josh Plautz, also listed with the Soph designation, completed Bay’s team score with a 99 in his first varsity action. After nerves contributed to a challenging start, Josh steadied the round and recorded a 46 on the back nine. That finish reinforced the Rockets’ ability to adjust rather than allowing early holes to determine the final result.
“I couldn’t be more proud of this group,” the Bay coach said. “Their scores tell only part of the story. What stood out most was their attitude, their willingness to battle through adversity, and their ability to make adjustments throughout the round.” The Rockets represented Bay with class, positivity and pride, gaining varsity experience that should support their continued development over the next several seasons.
