Rockets Take Third Set but Fall 3-1 to Lakewood

Bay High School extended Lakewood to four sets Tuesday but fell 3-1 in a varsity volleyball match at 29230 Wolf Rd, Bay Village, OH 44140. The Rockets stayed within two points in the opening and closing sets while winning the third, but Lakewood completed a 25-23, 25-14, 20-25, 26-24 victory.
The opening set established a competitive tone as the Rockets pushed Lakewood through a tight finish before dropping it 25-23. Lakewood created more separation in the second set, winning 25-14 to take a two-set advantage and move within one set of closing the match.
Bay responded in the third set with its strongest result of the afternoon. The Rockets produced the points they needed at the service line and captured the set 25-20, extending the match and cutting Lakewood's lead to 2-1. It was Bay's widest set margin of the match and sent the Rockets into the fourth with an opportunity to force a deciding fifth set.
The service effort was led by Sloane Kerber with 11 points and Payton Masterson with 10. Camille Costin added six serving points, while Amelia Vecchio, Andy Naughton and Chloe Sullivan recorded four apiece. Morgan Parris contributed two points, and Lila Ross added one as seven Rockets combined for 38 serving points.
Bay again challenged Lakewood deep into the fourth set. The teams reached 24-24 before Lakewood claimed the next two points to take the set 26-24 and finish the match. The Rockets will next travel to face North Olmsted on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. EDT.
