Rockets Turn Pack Running Into Strong Showing at Avon Lake Earlybird XC Meet

Bay Boys XC delivered another strong team performance Saturday at the Avon Lake Earlybird XC Meet, using determined midrace moves and disciplined pack running throughout the 5K course. Gavin English led the Rockets in the Maroon Race, finishing 17th in 17:47.8, while Liam Jager crossed just two seconds later in 18th at 17:49.8. Adrian Ray completed an impressive lead trio by placing 28th in 18:09.6.
With partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 75 degrees at the start, Bay focused less on personal-record times and more on competing for every position. The Rockets consistently gained ground through the middle portion of the race, patiently picking off runners as the field stretched out. That strategy reflected an important cross country lesson for a team still gaining experience at the distance: Time is the goal, but place is the result.
The Maroon lineup showed strength beyond its front three. Sam McClellan placed 76th in 19:06.4, Charles Juratic followed in 86th at 19:18.7 and Joe Kubiak took 95th in 19:24.8. That group gave Bay another compact pack in the heart of the race. Micah Bendoraitis and Dan Buttrick finished in consecutive places, taking 137th in 20:23.1 and 138th in 20:31.3, respectively. James Greenleaf rounded out the Maroon finishers in 160th with a time of 21:34.2.
Bay carried the same competitive approach into the Open Race. Adam Baltz paced the Rockets in 46th at 20:25.0, with Liam Loeffler close behind in 54th at 20:34.7. Mason Shah added a 65th-place finish in 20:44.1. The trio stayed within 20 seconds of one another, another encouraging example of Bay runners working through the course as a group.
The Rockets continued to arrive in clusters as Jack Marcuse finished 84th in 21:04.7, Max Clevenger took 91st in 21:14.3 and Carver Vovos placed 92nd in 21:15.5. Athan Thanos followed in 99th at 21:23.5. Graham Dunstan earned 136th in 22:08.8, Eli Belveal placed 141st in 22:13.6 and Gerry Maloney finished 150th. Jonah Bendoraitis took 167th, while Leo Krueger crossed 185th in 23:16.2.
Lukas McGrew placed 202nd, Aidan Hays finished 211th in 24:11.6 and Gavin Fry completed the Open Race in 254th at 26:16.9. From the front of the Maroon field through the final Open finisher, the Rockets competed with patience and purpose. The times did not produce personal records, but the steady passing, tight packs and willingness to battle for places made the meet another important step forward for Bay.
