Rockets Wrestling Turns in Gritty Day on the Mats at Twinsburg

Bay High School’s Wrestling team delivered a strong overall performance at the Twinsburg Tiger Duals, compiling a 24–16 record in head-to-head bouts despite a series of shorthanded lineups that altered several dual outcomes. Competing against a strong field, the Rockets closed the day with hard-fought duals against Waynedale, Eastlake North, Shaw, and Twinsburg, and capped the event with a solid victory over Independence.

Team results fluctuated based on available personnel throughout the day. Bay opened with a loss to perennial power Waynedale, 80–0, before falling 51–24 to Eastlake North and dropping a tightly contested 42–38 dual to Shaw, where forfeited weight classes proved costly. The Rockets then dropped a 48–34 decision to Twinsburg before closing the event in dominant fashion with a 48–6 win over Independence.

In head-to-head matchups, the Rockets were highly competitive across the board, posting winning records against Independence (4–1), Twinsburg (4–2), and Shaw High School (5–2). Even against Eastlake North (2–3) and perennial power Waynedale (0–8), the matches were hard-fought and showcased our ability to compete. Ultimately, the overall team results were heavily impacted by forfeited weight classes, which created point swings that proved decisive in several duals.

Individually, three Rockets led the way with standout efforts. Senior Joe Beauchesne at 150 pounds, freshman Carver Vovos at 106 and freshman Max Prahl at 120 each finished the day 4–1, setting the tone for Bay’s competitiveness across multiple duals. Their consistency in the middle and lower weights helped stabilize the lineup and keep the Rockets within striking distance even in duals that were ultimately decided by forfeits.

Prahl also delivered one of the signature performances of the event in a marquee 120-pound bout against Independence. Facing a returning state qualifier who is currently ranked No. 9 in Ohio, Prahl outlasted his opponent in a high-scoring 16-13 decision in sudden-victory overtime. The win not only provided a key individual highlight but also underscored the potential of Bay’s underclassmen against elite competition.

Depth and balance were evident throughout the lineup. Junior Carter Baruxes at 138 pounds and senior Michael Surovi at 132 each picked up three wins on the day, adding important points in the middle weights and contributing to the Rockets’ team victories. Coaches also pointed to the fact that every wrestler in the lineup secured at least two wins, reinforcing the notion that the performance was a complete team effort rather than the product of just a few standouts.

While forfeits due to illness swung the outcome of multiple duals, the Rockets’ 24–16 individual match record provided a positive indicator of where the team stands as the season progresses. With emerging underclassmen, reliable seniors and improving depth across the lineup, Bay demonstrated that, at full strength, it can compete effectively with a wide range of opponents. The showing at Twinsburg positions the Rockets to build momentum heading into the next stretch of the schedule.
