Bay Rockets Girls Basketball rode a dominant second half and a string of late defensive stands to edge Kenston 43-39 in a district semifinal Thursday night at Bay Village, earning the Rockets a spot in Saturday’s district championship game.
Norah Trefz capped a 22-point performance with two clutch free throws in the final seconds, but it was a go-ahead basket from Chloe Kazma and a game-saving block by Anna Weingart that defined the closing moments. With the score tied late, Kazma cut through the lane for the eventual game-winner off a feed from Trefz, putting Bay ahead 41-39 with 41 seconds remaining. After Kenston advanced the ball and called timeout with 5 seconds left to set up a potential game-winning 3-pointer, Weingart snuffed out the attempt with a block on the perimeter. Kenston was then forced to foul, and Trefz calmly sank both free throws to seal the four-point victory.
The Rockets had to grind through a slow start before taking control. The first 5 minutes produced just five combined points, and Kenston found its footing first, building a 13-9 lead after one quarter. Bay’s offense remained limited before halftime, and Kenston maintained its four-point cushion at the break, 23-19. The Rockets’ defense, however, kept the game within reach, setting the stage for a decisive surge after intermission.
Out of halftime, Bay flipped the script by tightening its defense and finding better rhythm on the offensive end. The Rockets outscored Kenston 14-7 in the third quarter, turning a four-point deficit into a 33-30 lead heading to the fourth. In the final quarter, Bay continued to rely on half-court defense and timely plays, edging Kenston 10-9 over the last eight minutes. Key stops down the stretch, culminating in Weingart’s block and Trefz’s free throws, ensured that Kenston never reclaimed the lead once Bay moved in front.
Trefz led all scorers with 22 points to go with 3 rebounds and 1 assist, pacing the Rockets’ offense and delivering under pressure at the foul line. Kazma provided a crucial secondary scoring punch with 8 points, adding 4 rebounds and a team-high 3 steals while delivering the go-ahead basket in the closing minute. Weingart stuffed the stat sheet with 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks, 3 steals and 3 assists, anchoring Bay’s defensive effort on the perimeter, including the blocked 3-point attempt that preserved the lead.
Inside, Caroline Chilton controlled the glass, finishing with 2 points but a team-high 10 rebounds, along with 2 blocks, 2 assists and 2 steals as Bay limited Kenston to one shot on many key possessions. Madelyn Lee added 7 points and 2 rebounds, contributing to the balanced attack that gradually wore down Kenston in the second half.
With the comeback win, Bay advances to the district championship game, where the Rockets will face Brush High School on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m at Perry High School in Lake County. The semifinal showed the Rockets’ ability to respond to early adversity, lean on defense and execute in late-game situations, traits that will be crucial as they pursue a district title.
