Bay High School used a fast start, timely shooting from beyond the arc and a relentless defensive effort to defeat Beaumont 42-34 in an OHSAA Division III first-round playoff game Saturday night at Bay High School. The Rockets sealed the win late in the fourth quarter when Madelyn Lee followed a split trip at the free-throw line by stealing the rebound of her own miss, leading to a key basket from Anna Spellman that pushed the game out of reach.
Bay established control early, building a 14-8 lead after the first quarter behind active defense and efficient perimeter scoring. The Rockets extended that advantage in the second quarter, fueled by senior guard Norah Trefz, who buried three 3-pointers in the first half. Her final triple, coming with 4.6 seconds left before halftime, sent the Rockets into the locker room with a 29-17 cushion and firmly shifted the momentum in Bay’s favor.
Both teams struggled to score coming out of halftime, as the game turned into a defensive grind. Bay managed just four points in the third quarter but continued to control the tempo on the defensive end, limiting Beaumont’s looks and holding the visitors to 23 points through three quarters. The Rockets entered the fourth with a 33-23 lead, having used their length, rotations and pressure to disrupt Beaumont’s offense.
Beaumont mounted a push in the final eight minutes, outscoring Bay 11-9 in the fourth quarter and trimming the deficit to two possessions in the closing minutes. That surge set up the decisive sequence involving Lee at the foul line. After hitting the first free throw to stretch the margin to six, Lee missed the second but quickly stole the ball back, extending the possession. Spellman converted on the ensuing opportunity, effectively closing the door on Beaumont’s comeback bid and preserving the Rockets’ first postseason victory.
Trefz led Bay with 13 points, three rebounds and three steals, pacing the Rockets’ offense while contributing to the defensive pressure on the perimeter. Chloe Kazma added 10 points, three rebounds and three steals, providing a two-way presence in the frontcourt. Lee finished with seven points, seven rebounds and three steals, impacting the game in multiple areas, including the pivotal late-game sequence. Anna Weingart orchestrated the offense with eight points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals, helping the Rockets maintain composure against Beaumont’s runs.
Collectively, Bay’s defense was the difference. The Rockets recorded 25 deflections and 17 steals, consistently disrupting passing lanes and limiting Beaumont to just 36 field-goal attempts for the game. That activity allowed Bay to withstand a slow second half offensively while maintaining control of the scoreboard and advancing in the bracket.
With the win, the Rockets move on to the district semifinal, where they will host the Kenston Bombers at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Bay enters the matchup with confidence after a balanced scoring effort and a defensive performance that set the tone for the program’s postseason aspirations.
