Valuable Lessons Gained by Youthful Rockets

Bay High School stayed within striking distance throughout Monday’s match at the Briar-Patch, but the Westlake Demons used a strong finish to defeat the Rockets by three strokes, 170-173. The varsity boys golf match began at 4:30 p.m. in partly cloudy, 84-degree conditions in Avon Lake, Ohio.

Sam Vardon led Bay with a 41, the Rockets’ lowest round of the match. Strong ball striking from Sam helped set the tone as Bay remained close on a course that demanded consistency. Freshman Jack McAllester followed with a 43, continuing a solid opening stretch of varsity competition.

Bay received another 44 from freshman Robert Pinkeva, whose confidence and results have continued to improve. Robert Pinkava also appeared among the top finishers with a 44. Jack continued to build momentum during an encouraging freshman campaign, while Robert showed further progress and growing confidence on the course.

The Rockets had several players clustered at 45. Joe Boushelle, Deloy Johnson and Max Berry each carded that score, helping Bay complete its team total of 173. Joe Boushelle and Deloy Johnson also finished with 45s, giving the Rockets depth in a match decided by only three shots. Bay’s four counting scores were 41, 43, 44 and 45.

The decisive swing came on the final hole, a demanding 230-yard par-3. Westlake played the hole five strokes better than the Rockets, providing the late separation the Demons needed to secure the victory. That closing performance allowed the Westlake Demons Demons to finish at 170 and withstand Bay’s balanced scoring.

Although the Rockets fell short, their tightly grouped scores reflected a competitive round from start to finish. With freshmen contributing and multiple players producing scores in the mid-40s, Bay left the Briar-Patch with another round of experience to carry into its next match.
