Buckeye High School’s girls lacrosse team turned in a determined effort Wednesday night at Louisville High School, battling through injuries and a short bench before falling to Louisville in a difficult road test.

The Bucks were shorthanded for much of the game and, according to team notes, finished by playing two players down because of injury. Even so, Buckeye continued to compete, adjusting on the fly with two new players in the lineup and refusing to let the game slip without a fight. The decisive stretch came as Louisville wore Buckeye down over the course of the night, capitalizing late after the Bucks had slowed the pace with a defensive adjustment.

One of Buckeye’s key responses was a move to a zone defense, a change that helped slow Louisville’s offense and allowed the Bucks to stay organized despite the numbers disadvantage. Natalie Clark stood out in midfield and on defense, making an impact with outstanding work on ground balls. Molly Danilovic also provided a lift defensively, turning in several strong runs that helped Buckeye push forward and relieve pressure.

Buckeye also got strong hustle efforts from Bianka, Hailey and Mya, while Leah and Grace split time in goal and helped keep the team in the game with their work in the cage. Specific goal, assist, faceoff and save totals were not provided, but the notes from the game reflected a group that continued to compete for loose balls and possessions even as depth became a challenge.

The game also underscored some areas Buckeye will continue to address moving forward, especially draw percentages, winning the ball and maintaining possession. Still, the larger takeaway from Wednesday’s matchup was the team’s response under difficult circumstances. The girls played hard, played the right way and never gave up, an effort that stood out even in defeat as Buckeye pushed through a demanding night against Louisville.
