Buckeye battles through tough road test against Riverside
Buckeye High School girls varsity lacrosse ran into a strong Riverside squad Wednesday night, falling on the road at Painesville Riverside High School in a game where possession proved to be the decisive factor. Riverside controlled the draw circle for long stretches and used that edge to pull away, with the senior-heavy group and a Division I commit in the midfield setting the tone from start to finish.
The Bucks kept competing and never let the effort slip, even as Riverside dictated the pace. Buckeye had chances to get on the board, but Riverside's defense consistently stepped in to deny those opportunities. That defensive pressure, combined with Riverside's ability to win draws and string together possessions, made it difficult for the Bucks to build momentum in the attacking end.
Even in a tough loss, Buckeye found encouraging moments. Zoey and Leah delivered several tough saves in goal, helping the Bucks withstand repeated pressure and showing the kind of fight that kept the team working deep into the game. Their play in the cage gave Buckeye chances to reset and continue battling against a balanced Riverside attack.
Riverside's possession game was the difference. Strong draw play allowed the home team to control the ball throughout the night, and balanced scoring helped turn that advantage into separation on the scoreboard. For Buckeye, the game also served as a clear measuring stick against a talented opponent, especially one built around experienced seniors.
There was still plenty for the Bucks to take from the night. The players continued to compete, learned from their mistakes, and showed resilience against one of the tougher challenges on the schedule. That spirit remains a point of pride for Buckeye High School Athletics, and it is the kind of response the program can build on as the season moves forward.
