Buckeye Blanks Lakewood 3-0 Behind Fitzgerald's Opening Goal On Wednesday Night
Lakewood High School - Rya Fitzgerald scored the decisive opening goal, and Buckeye’s defense allowed only five shots in a 3-0 victory over Lakewood on Wednesday. The Bucks scored twice in the first half before adding an insurance goal after halftime, improving their record to 2-3-2.
Fitzgerald put Buckeye ahead with an unassisted goal at 15:44 of the first half. Tenley Winter doubled the advantage converting a chance created by Avery Contrera to send the Bucks into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Buckeye continued to apply pressure in the second half, and Buckeye - Maddie Wilhelm completed the scoring off an assist from Olivia Pedmo. The three goals came from six shots on goal as the Bucks consistently produced the match’s stronger attacking opportunities.
The Bucks finished with a 19-5 advantage in total shots and earned all four of the match’s corner kicks. Lakewood put three attempts on target, but Carlie Gunkelman saved each one to preserve the shutout. Lakewood’s goalkeeper made three saves as the hosts fell to 1-4.
The Junior Varsity result followed a 1-1 draw between the Buckeye and Lakewood junior varsity teams. Buckeye’s varsity team will next host Rocky River for a 7 p.m. EDT match Wednesday, Sept. 9.
