Buckeye Girls Place Sixth, Boys Seventh at Boardman Regional Preview

BOARDMAN, Ohio - Buckeye’s girls placed sixth among 42 Division III teams, and the boys finished seventh in a 31-team Division II field Saturday at the Boardman Spartan regional preview. Freshman Hannah Dugan led the girls by placing 24th out of 287 runners in 21 minutes, 3 seconds, while senior Dimitry Pshonyak and sophomore Joe Stahl finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the boys race. Both teams recorded their best finishes and fastest top-five averages on the course, with the girls averaging 22:16 and the boys 17:30 against some of the region’s strongest competition.
The girls raced under clear skies and stayed together through the scoring lineup. Hayleigh Kreeger followed Dugan in 35th with a time of 21:23, and Lily Regiec took 67th in 22:29. Mackenzie Anderson crossed in 23:06 for 95th, while Lila Hoover completed the five-runner scoring group in 100th at 23:18. The pack helped Buckeye stay close to district and regional rival Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. Kreeger, Regiec and Hoover each set course personal bests, as did Kate Shearer, who placed 169th in 25:19, and Riley Onyx, who was 185th in 25:48. Hoover and Onyx each cut about three minutes from their 2025 course times.
Anna Kosman added another course personal best, placing 201st in 26:29. Freshman Ganen Losh also reached a milestone by making a Buckeye debut and completing a first cross country 5K in 33:20. Those performances added depth to a girls effort that produced the team’s best showing of the season against regional-level competition.
Rain arrived for the boys race, but Pshonyak remained near the front throughout and closed with a kick showdown against Hoover’s Alex Hobe. Pshonyak finished fourth in 16:19, and Stahl followed in fifth at 16:27, approximately a minute faster than Stahl’s previous best on the course. Pshonyak and Hobe ran near each other throughout the 2025 postseason, when Hobe held the advantage at the regional and state meets, and their Boardman finish renewed that developing rivalry ahead of the 2026 postseason.
Buckeye’s scoring pack formed behind the two front-runners. John Galayda placed 68th in 17:51, Nolan Rieth was 73rd in 17:55 and Nick Rieth finished 84th in a personal-record 18:02. Gavin Waibel served as the first displacer in 87th at 18:03, followed by Dylan Lough in 106th at 18:23. Cameron Wyman completed the varsity group in 116th with a time of 18:32. Pshonyak, Stahl, Galayda, Nolan Rieth, Nick Rieth and Waibel each ran course personal bests as Buckeye competed closely with regional rivals Salem and Massillon Perry. Twenty-two of the boys team’s 23 runners competed at Boardman.
The boys junior varsity team added a third-place finish among 23 teams with 88 points. Aiden Williamson led the group in eighth at 18:55, more than four minutes faster than the 23:04 Williamson ran on the course in 2025. Bennett Knapp placed 16th in 19:12, Vinny Joy was 18th in 19:13, Jackson Plisko took 23rd in 19:23 and Paul Abbott finished 28th in 19:35. Nick Sekerak Jr. was 31st, in 19:37, and Ben Naso placed 97th in 20:35 as the displacers. Nick Rieth, Knapp, Noah Janke, Will Bienias and Raymond Nicolai recorded personal-best times. Buckeye next travels to the Todd Clark Cloverleaf Invitational on September 26th at Silver Creek Metropark in Norton, OH.
