Buckeye Girls Win Invitational as Boys Finish One Point Back

MEDINA, Ohio - Buckeye’s girls won the Buckeye Invitational with 52 points, while the boys finished one point behind Independence in a pair of strong team performances Saturday at Buckeye High School. Both Bucks squads placed all five scoring runners among the top 25 despite changing race conditions.
The girls finished first in a 14-team field, defeating runner-up North Royalton and third-place Independence. Hannah Dugan led Buckeye by covering the 5-kilometer course in 20 minutes, 47 seconds for third place, and Hayleigh Kreeger followed in fourth at 21:03. Their early presence near the front gave the Bucks two low scores around which to build the winning total.
Buckeye’s pack completed the job in the humid, warm conditions. Lily Regiec placed 11th in 21:58, while Lila Hoover and Mackenzie Anderson finished back-to-back. Hoover took 19th in 23:01, and Anderson was 20th in 23:04. The 66-second spread from Buckeye’s third scorer to its fifth helped secure the team victory in a race featuring 107 runners.
In the rainy boys race, Dimitry Pshonyak and Joe Stahl swept the top two positions, each recording a 16:06 finish. Buckeye backed that front-running effort with three more top-25 performances in the 174-runner field. John Galayda III finished 19th in 17:29, Nolan Rieth was 22nd in 17:36, and Gavin Waibel placed 24th in 17:42. Cameron Wyman was Buckeye’s top freshman, finishing 27th in 17:47.
The boys’ pack placed all five scorers in the top 25 and kept the team race close through the finish. Independence scored 34 points to Buckeye’s 35, with North Olmsted a distant third at 108. The narrow margin underscored the importance of every position as Pshonyak and Stahl led the race and Galayda, Rieth and Waibel worked through the field behind them.
Buckeye also celebrated its seniors after the meet, recognizing Noah, Cole, Nolan, Paul, Ben, Gavin, John, Dimitry, Aria, Mackenzie and Kate. The Bucks are scheduled to race away at the Boardman Spartan Invitational in Boardman, OH this coming Saturday, September 19th.
