Buckeye Wrestling Places Fifth at Deep Liberty Classic Field
Buckeye High School wrestling turned in a strong team performance at the Liberty Classic on Saturday, finishing fifth out of 25 teams in a deep and competitive field at Olentangy Liberty High School.
The Bucks placed two wrestlers in the championship finals, as 120-pounder Collin Bartos and 215-pounder Justin Augustine each finished as runner-up in their brackets. Both navigated difficult paths to the title matches, giving Buckeye valuable team points and establishing themselves among some of the state’s top competitors at their respective weights.
Buckeye added two third-place finishers in 126-pounder Brenden McKee and 165-pounder Brody Zoul, further bolstering the team score. McKee battled back through the consolation rounds to secure a podium finish, while Zoul closed his day with a strong placement in the upper middle weights, helping solidify the Bucks’ spot in the top five of the overall standings.
At 144 pounds, Logan Letner claimed fifth place, adding another solid finish for Buckeye in a key middleweight class. The Bucks also recorded a sixth-place individual finish and had three additional wrestlers reach the blood round, coming up one win short of placing. Those performances underscored the team’s depth and competitiveness across the lineup, even in weight classes that did not end on the podium.
Senior standout Blake Bartos advanced to the semifinals before illness forced the coaching staff to pull him from the tournament. Despite being unable to finish the event, Bartos’ early-round wins were enough to secure a sixth-place finish, and his run to the semifinal round reflected the level at which he was wrestling before being sidelined.
Across the board, Buckeye showed it can battle with some of the best teams in the state, matching up well in multiple weight classes and responding to the challenges of a large invitational. With multiple finalists, several podium finishes, and others knocking on the door in the blood round, the Bucks’ fifth-place team finish at the Liberty Classic provides a strong midseason benchmark and momentum heading into the heart of the winter schedule.
