Bucks Reach Stepladder Semifinals at Amherst Holiday Roll Off

Buckeye High School’s varsity boys bowling team turned in a strong tournament performance at the Amherst Holiday Roll Off on Sunday at Park Bar and Grille Lanes, advancing to the stepladder semifinals and finishing fourth in a six-team field. The Bucks used balanced scoring in regulation and timely Baker games to push into match play before bowing out in a frame-by-frame roll-off against top-seeded Amherst’s A team.

Buckeye posted a first-round total of 3,178, led by standout series from several bowlers. Alex Marconi paced the Bucks with games of 215, 211 and 163 for a 589 series, while John Ambrose was close behind at 584 after rolling 202, 190 and 192. Kevin Miller added a 564 series (204, 148, 212), and Carter Fry contributed 553 (194, 214, 145) as Buckeye’s lineup provided consistent scoring through three team games.

Additional depth came from Hunter Uehlein and Sean Chambers. Uehlein turned in games of 150 and 156, and Chambers added a 139 as the Bucks rounded out their qualifying effort. In Baker play, Buckeye delivered games of 225 and 218, lifting the overall total to 3,178 and securing fourth place heading into the stepladder. Amherst’s A squad led qualifying at 3,717, highlighted by a 300 game from Ethan Burich to open the competition. Amherst’s B team finished second at 3,426, and Fairport Harbor took third at 3,312.

Once in the stepladder, Buckeye continued to respond under pressure. The Bucks rolled Baker games of 181, 170, 202 and 236 in match play, steadily raising their scoring pace as the rounds tightened. The fourth Baker game ended in a tie, forcing a frame-by-frame roll-off against Amherst A for a spot in the finals, setting up the most dramatic moment of the day.

In the roll-off, Ambrose and Burich went head-to-head. Both struck in the first frame, keeping the pressure high for their teams. In the second frame, Ambrose left an 8-count while Burich answered with another strike, giving Amherst the edge it needed to advance and eliminating Buckeye from championship contention. Despite the narrow exit, the Bucks’ ability to push the top qualifier to a sudden-death roll-off underscored the team’s growth and competitiveness in a high-level holiday field.

With multiple bowlers over 550 and Baker games that consistently climbed as the day progressed, Buckeye’s performance at Amherst provided a solid midseason benchmark. The Bucks leave the Holiday Roll Off with valuable tournament experience, momentum from a stepladder run, and confidence as they return to dual-match competition later in December.
