BAY VILLAGE, Ohio - Bay scored at the 27:02 mark of the second half Wednesday to edge Buckeye 1-0 in a tightly contested varsity match. The decisive goal broke a scoreless tie and handed the Bucks their fourth loss of the season at Bay High School.
Goalkeeper Carlie Gunkelman led Buckeye's defensive effort with 10 saves, repeatedly keeping the Bucks within one scoring chance. Bay generated 20 shots, including 11 on goal, but Gunkelman and the Buckeye defense prevented the hosts from adding to their advantage after the breakthrough.
Buckeye remained organized through a scoreless first half despite sustained pressure from Bay. The hosts finished with eight corner kicks, while the Bucks earned one. Bay's volume eventually produced the match's only goal in the second half, but the Buckeye defense held firm over the remaining minutes to preserve the one-goal margin.
The Bucks finished with two shots, putting one on goal. Bay's goalkeeper made one save to secure the shutout. The result moved Buckeye to 5-4-2, while Bay improved to 9-1.
Bay also won the junior varsity match 8-1. Buckeye's varsity team faces Copley on Monday, September 28th on the road.
