Penny, Valus Lift Buckeye to 2-0 Shutout of Ashland

Morgan Penny broke a scoreless tie with 13:15 remaining, and Sarah Valus added an insurance goal five minutes later as Buckeye defeated Ashland 2-0 Saturday night at home. The victory improved the Bucks to 5-3-2 and gave them a clean sheet after a tightly contested first half.
Buckeye generated chances throughout the match but entered halftime tied 0-0. The Bucks finished with a 15-9 advantage in shots and put 12 attempts on goal, forcing Ashland’s goalkeeper to make 10 saves. Buckeye also earned six corner kicks while limiting Ashland to two.
The breakthrough came when Penny scored unassisted with 13:15 left in the second half. The goal rewarded Buckeye’s sustained pressure and forced Ashland to chase an equalizer. Valus then doubled the lead with another unassisted finish at the 8:13 mark, giving the Bucks control of the closing minutes.
Buckeye goalkeeper Carlie Gunkelman protected the advantage with three saves, turning away each of Ashland’s shots on goal. The Bucks’ defense held Ashland scoreless despite nine total attempts, completing Buckeye’s shutout and dropping Ashland to 3-7-1.
Ashland won the junior varsity match 4-1. The Buckeye varsity team is scheduled to return to action on the road against North Olmsted at 7 p.m. EDT Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026.
