MEDINA, Ohio - Tenley Winter's second-half goal lifted Buckeye High School Athletics' girls soccer team (9-4-2) to a 1-0 victory over Gilmour Academy (8-4-1) on Saturday, Oct. 10, in Medina.
Carlie Gunkelman anchored the shutout with 12 saves, stopping every Gilmour Academy shot on goal. Buckeye faced a 24-6 disadvantage in total shots, but the goalkeeper's performance kept the visitors off the scoreboard despite their greater volume of chances. Gilmour Academy also held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
Winter scored unassisted in the second half, with the goal listed at 39:03. Buckeye put two of its six shots on goal and converted one of those attempts into the match's only score. Gilmour Academy's goalkeeper finished with one save, while the visitors placed 12 of their 24 attempts on target.
The result gave the Bucks a win over the #2 ranked team in the state in Division 3 heading into postseason play. Buckeye's narrow attacking output was enough because its defense paired the lone goal with a clean sheet, leaving Gilmour Academy without an equalizer despite advantages in shots and set-piece opportunities.
The junior varsity match also ended without a Gilmour Academy goal, as the teams played to a 0-0 tie. Buckeye plays next at North Olmsted on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m.
