Winter Scores Twice as Buckeye Blanks Rocky River for First Win over the Pirates Since 2018
MEDINA, Ohio - Tenley Winter scored in each half Wednesday, lifting Buckeye to a 2-0 varsity victory over Rocky River and the program’s first win against Rocky River since 2018. Winter’s opening goal at 7:54 proved decisive as the Bucks earned the shutout at their home field in Medina.
Winter put Buckeye in front by finishing a chance created by Avery Deringer early in the first half. The Bucks carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime, then doubled the margin at 12:06 of the second half. Rya J. Fitzgerald assisted Winter on the second goal, completing her two-goal performance and giving the defense additional room to protect the lead.
Buckeye generated 13 shots and placed five on goal, compared with eight total shots for Rocky River. Carlie Gunkelman made one save to preserve the clean sheet. The match totals also included zero corner kicks for Buckeye and 5 for Rocky River, while Rocky River recorded 1 shot on goal and 3 saves.
The Bucks improved their record to 3-3-2. Rocky River dropped to 2-3-1. The two goals marked a balanced attacking effort across the halves, while the back line prevented Rocky River from finding an equalizer after Winter’s early breakthrough. In the Junior Varsity matchup, the result was Rocky River 2, Buckeye 0.
Buckeye will continue its schedule on the road against Normandy at 7 p.m. EDT Tuesday, Sept. 15. The Bucks will look to build on Winter’s finishing, the two assists and a defensive performance that produced their milestone victory over Rocky River.
