Cascade High School defeated Philomath 3-1 in a league volleyball match Thursday, October 1, in Turner, winning three straight sets after dropping a close opener. The Cougars prevailed 25-27, 25-18, 25-11, 25-23, with sophomore Kane Lane recording 21 kills on 47 attacks.
The opening set stayed tight through extended rallies before Philomath secured the two-point win. Sophomore London Oliver played the first set at outside hitter and defensive specialist before freshman Gracie Robinson replaced her in the second. Robinson played all the way around, contributing strong swings and covering her defensive assignments as Cascade pulled even.
Serving streaks helped the Cougars create separation in the second and third sets, easing the pressure after the point-by-point opener. Cascade took the second 25-18, then produced its widest margin of the match with a 25-11 third-set victory to move ahead 2-1. Sophomore outside hitter Ainsley Ward contributed with a quick arm and forceful swings that put balls down.
Lane gave Cascade several ways to finish points from the middle. She converted overpasses into kills, placed tips and drove attacks to the 10-foot line as part of her 21-kill performance. Senior right-side hitter Jordyn Patterson also contributed kills, using her left-handed swing to place attacks through Philomath’s defense.
Senior Macie Theis and Vanessa Ravera finished with 21 digs apiece, supporting Cascade’s offense by keeping rallies alive. Wearing the libero jersey, Theis pursued balls throughout the court and moved forward to cover in front of the 10-foot line. That defensive effort complemented the Cougars’ attacking contributions in a match that remained competitive despite a small crowd.
Philomath kept the fourth set close, returning the match to the point-by-point exchanges of the opener. This time, Cascade secured the narrow finish, taking the set 25-23 to complete the four-set victory. The Cougars will look for another victory in their next contest on Tuesday, October 6th against Stayton.
