Cascade Girls Soccer Falls to Cross-Town Rival Stayton on Late Corner Kick
TURNER, Ore. - Cascade High School fell 2-1 to cross-town rival Stayton High School last Tuesday after the Eagles scored from a corner kick in the final 24 seconds. The late goal decided a close league soccer match in which the Cougars answered an early deficit and created numerous second-half scoring chances.
Stayton took a 1-0 lead on a Cascade own goal, but the Cougars responded five minutes later. Freshman Hayden Cantrell delivered a cross to senior Halle Hammer, who scored to tie the match at 1-1. Cantrell’s assist and Hammer’s finish erased the deficit and accounted for Cascade’s lone goal.
The Cougars continued to generate opportunities in the second half, repeatedly finding chances at goal but failing to convert. Despite those missed opportunities, Cascade remained level with the Eagles heading into the closing seconds. A second goal eluded the Cougars as they pushed to break the tie.
Cascade’s defense and goalkeeping delivered a solid performance throughout the match, helping keep the contest close. The decisive sequence came with Stayton’s entire team crowding the six-yard box and crashing the goal on a corner kick. The Eagles scored amid that pressure in the final 24 seconds to take the 2-1 lead.
The finish left Cascade short of a result after its quick equalizer and second-half chances against its rival. The Cougars will look to bounce back in their next contest at Taft on Thursday, October. 8th.
