Cascade High School erased a two-set deficit before falling to Scappoose in five sets Tuesday night at Scappoose High School The Cougars dropped the non-league match 18-25, 20-25, 25-14, 25-18, 11-15, coming within one set of completing the comeback.

Scappoose established the early advantage by winning the opening set by seven points. Cascade improved in the second set and reached 20 points, but Scappoose closed out a 25-20 victory to take a 2-0 match lead. That left the Cougars needing to win three consecutive sets to claim the match.

Cascade began fighting back against Scappoose in the third set and produced its most decisive performance of the night. The Cougars pushed through the frustration of the first two losses, controlled the set 25-14 and shifted the match's momentum. Cascade carried that response into the fourth set, winning 25-18 to force a decisive fifth.

"We did really good at turning it back around and rising from two bad sets"

The Cougars could not sustain that momentum through the shortened final set. Scappoose reached 15 points first and secured the match with a 15-11 win, ending Cascade's comeback four points short. Even in defeat, the third- and fourth-set turnaround showed the Cougars' ability to respond after a difficult start and extend the match.

Middle blocker Kade Lane led Cascade at the net with 11 kills and five blocks, providing offense and resistance during the Cougars' comeback. Outside hitter and opposite London Oliver recorded three aces, while libero and defensive specialist Macie Theis anchored the back row with 17 digs. Kade Lane also finished with stronger hitting, serve-receive, digging and blocking numbers while committing fewer errors.

Cascade will return home to face Marist Catholic at 6 p.m. tonight. The Cougars will look to carry forward the resilience that helped them turn a two-set deficit into a fifth-set finish.

"We can improve on minimizing our errors, heavily"
