SANDY, Ore. - Cascade High School established its offense early and paired it with timely defensive stops Friday night, defeating top-10 5A Sandy 42-21 in a nonleague game. Travis Conklin's interception in the third quarter provided the decisive defensive moment, preserving the Cougars' momentum as they pulled away for the road victory.

Quarterback Madden Hughes powered the Cascade offense with three total touchdowns. Hughes completed 7 of 14 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns, and he added another score on the ground. His biggest completion was a 50-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Born, giving the Cougars an explosive scoring play as their offense found its rhythm.

Cascade also created favorable field position on special teams. Brady broke free for a 54-yard kickoff return, flipping the field and adding to the pressure on Sandy. The Cougars consistently turned their opportunities into points, building their 42-point performance around explosive plays and productive possessions.

Weston Shewell helped provide balance in the running game, carrying eight times for 46 yards. His work complemented Hughes' production through the air and on the ground. Cascade has totaled 535 yards this season, with the performance against Sandy showing the offense's ability to generate yards in several ways.

The defense did its part by making stops that repeatedly sent the offense back onto the field. Conklin's third-quarter interception was the biggest takeaway, ending a Sandy possession and helping Cascade maintain control of the game's momentum. The Cougars held the Pioneers to 21 points while producing twice that total on offense.

Cascade will remain on the road for its next game, traveling to face Central at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18.
