Cascade Volleyball Season Defined by Resilience, Senior Leadership and Growth

TURNER, Ore. - Down two sets on Senior Night against Stayton, Cascade High School found the response that would define its volleyball season: a five-set reverse sweep built on trust and persistence. Five seniors helped guide a young Cougars squad through a season of growing pains, developing confidence and a playoff battle against Astoria.

The challenges surfaced early. Cascade rallied from two sets down in its opener against Scappoose before losing the fifth, then struggled in a three-set loss to Marist Catholic. A later four-set victory over Astoria ended a three-match losing streak. Those early matches introduced a recurring test for the Cougars: learning how to stay connected when frustration or doubt threatened to interrupt their play.

Coach Cristina Williams emphasized communication, confidence and accountability as the team worked through those stretches. Players had to learn that individual ability alone would not solve every problem. Their most effective volleyball came when they played freely, trusted teammates and celebrated one another’s success. That work aligned with Williams’ broader priorities of building resilience, discipline and respect alongside competitive results.

The five seniors supplied experience and leadership while younger players found their voices. Cascade’s developing core included a sophomore starting setter who had reached varsity as a freshman and a sophomore middle blocker in a second varsity season. Players also adjusted to changing responsibilities across the lineup, and a freshman stepped into an all-around role during a four-set win over Philomath. Growth meant both learning positions and becoming more comfortable contributing when needed.

League play offered evidence of that progress without eliminating the setbacks. Cascade swept Newport with steady serving and few hitting errors, then earned four-set victories over Philomath, Taft and Newport later in the schedule. An earlier loss at Stayton featured four sets decided by two points apiece. The Senior Night rematch brought a different outcome, as the Cougars recovered from a two-set deficit rather than allowing the match to slip away. Williams identified that comeback as the season’s biggest turning point.

The playoff match against Astoria provided another measure of the team’s development, even without the result Cascade wanted. The Cougars continued battling through the finish. For Williams, that effort belonged alongside the Senior Night victory in explaining the season: one showed what belief could produce on the scoreboard, while the other showed the team’s willingness to compete through disappointment.

After 17 years of coaching at Cascade, Williams valued the season for the players’ development beyond match results. The seniors helped establish expectations for supporting teammates and handling adversity, leaving younger players with examples to carry forward. “They didn’t always have it figured out, but they kept showing up, learning, and fighting,” Williams said. “To my five seniors: thank you for laying the foundation; your impact is lasting.”
