TURNER, Ore. - Halle Hammer scored within the opening five minutes to put Cascade High School ahead for good in a 2-0 league soccer victory over Newport on Tuesday, September 29, in Newport. Payton Beeks added a second-half goal, and the Cougars’ defense kept Newport off the scoreboard to complete the shutout.
Hammer’s quick strike gave Cascade an immediate advantage and supplied the only goal of the first half. The Cougars made their early offense count, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime while denying Newport an equalizer. That combination of an early finish and scoreless defending established the foundation for the road victory.
Beeks extended the lead to 2-0 after halftime, giving Cascade more room as the match moved toward its conclusion. The Cougars scored in both halves, with Hammer providing the breakthrough and Beeks delivering the additional goal that Newport would have to overcome.
Girls JV held Newport to a 0-0 tie.
Park Randall, Kaitlyn Webb and Hayden Cantrell also stood out for Cascade, joining Hammer and Beeks among the match’s notable performers. The Cougars backed their two-goal attack with a defensive effort that prevented Newport’s chances from producing a goal, preserving the lead through the second half.
The Cougars will look to win another one in their next contest this afternoon against Philomath. The game begins at 4:30 p.m.
