TILLAMOOK, Ore. - Cascade placed 27th among 43 scored teams in the varsity boys race and 19th among 28 in the varsity girls race Saturday at the Ultimook Meet, a challenging season-opening test at Hydrangea Ranch. Parker Hunt led the Cougars’ boys with a 5-kilometer time of 20 minutes, 52 seconds, while Makaylee Lung paced the girls in 23:03.
This year’s Ultimook race brought together 93 high school teams for a traditional cross country experience featuring mud pits and river crossings. Those conditions put a premium on controlled pacing, careful positioning and pack running, with each athlete’s place contributing to the team score.
The varsity boys faced the day’s most difficult weather as heavy rain fell during their 5K. Cascade worked through the downpour and the course’s natural obstacles to secure its 27th-place team result. The 20:52 leading performance gave the Cougars a benchmark on a course where footing and rhythm could change quickly.
Cascade’s varsity girls also navigated the mud and water successfully, finishing in the top 20 of a 28-team scored field. The girls were led by the 23:03 performance, and their collective finish showed the importance of staying connected and competing for positions throughout the race.
Partly cloudy conditions and a temperature of 61 degrees surrounded much of the meet, but the boys race’s rainfall added another layer to an already demanding course. Beyond the final times and places, the Cougars gained a shared experience that required patience, grit and commitment across both varsity races.
Cascade will next travel to the Stayton XC Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, at 10 a.m.
