Cascade High School defeated Newport 3-1 in a league volleyball match Thursday, Oct. 15. Vanessa Ravera delivered 20 consecutive serves during the second set, providing the standout stretch in the Cougars’ four-set victory.
The Cougars opened with a 25-20 first-set win before taking the second set 25-4. That second-set performance produced the widest margin of the match and put Cascade ahead two sets to none, leaving Newport needing to win three straight sets to take the match.
Ravera, a defensive specialist and outside hitter, kept Newport under pressure throughout the extended service run. Rallies during that stretch frequently ended with an ace or a Cascade block as Newport struggled in the back row. The Cougars paired their serving pressure with points at the net.
Cascade also found openings through well-placed attacks from all front-row positions. Jordyn Patterson identified spots Newport had left uncovered and put the ball down in those gaps. Her placement gave the Cougars another way to finish rallies alongside the serving and blocking that highlighted the second set.
Newport extended the match by winning the third set 25-21, but Cascade answered with a 25-10 fourth-set victory to close it out without a deciding fifth set. The Cougars play next at Philomath on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
