Knights Dominate Onaway 53-2 Behind Balanced Offense and Stifling Defense
CENTRAL LAKE, Mich. - Central Lake-Ellsworth controlled Friday’s game from start to finish, using a balanced offense and a defensive touchdown from Josiah Chellis to defeat Onaway 53-2 on Sept. 11. The Knights produced 275 yards of total offense while holding the Cardinals without an offensive score during the Patriots Game, which honored veterans and first responders on the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Quarterback Brady Roggenbeck led the passing attack, completing 6 of 11 attempts for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Roggenbeck also carried seven times for 17 yards and another score. Central Lake-Ellsworth finished with 110 passing yards and 165 yards on the ground, consistently turning possessions into points.
Bill Hopp supplied several of the Knights’ biggest offensive plays. Hopp rushed five times for 58 yards and a touchdown while adding two receptions for 40 yards, a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. Nolan Essenberg turned his lone reception into a 41-yard touchdown and also scored a 2-point conversion. Chellis caught two passes for 4 yards and added a conversion.
The rushing rotation gave Central Lake-Ellsworth production from multiple players. Riley Shafer gained 45 yards on five carries, scored a 2-point conversion and threw two successful 2-point conversion passes. Chellis added 39 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts, complementing the rushing scores from Hopp and Roggenbeck.
Central Lake-Ellsworth’s defense matched the offense’s efficiency. Chellis returned an interception for a touchdown and finished with six tackles. Tristan Druckenmiller and Shafer recorded eight tackles and one tackle for loss apiece, while Nolyn Whisler contributed seven tackles and a tackle for loss. Mason Henderson made five tackles.
Onaway’s only points came on a safety after the Cardinals turned the ball over on downs, and the Knights were assessed a penalty and then mishandled a snap. That sequence did little to change the outcome, as Central Lake-Ellsworth completed a dominant 51-point victory in Central Lake.
