CLACKAMAS, Ore. - Clackamas Girls Soccer loaded onto the bus to head into Portland, preparing to take on the Roosevelt Rough Riders under the lights. Clackamas entered the match underestimating Roosevelt based on its record and struggled to establish the right mentality early. Roosevelt capitalized when a forward scored 20 minutes into the first half, putting Clackamas behind 1-0 and forcing a response from the visiting team.
Ava Vermillion drove the ball to the goal line, weaving through defenders to get in range; Lillian Farris delivered the equalizer before halftime, finishing a cross from the breakaway after Clackamas moved the ball from the back line through midfield to the forwards. This demonstration of teamwork, building out from the back, brought Clackamas level at 1-1.
At halftime, Coaches Bart Yanoch andJonathan Vaquerano urged the team to keep working, make quick passes, and stay committed to its game. Each explained that the Cavs were completely capable of winning the match.
The teams traded stretches of play throughout the second half without breaking the tie until Angie Vaquerano sent a corner kick into the six-yard box. SavannahLopez met the delivery despite being marked by two defenders and headed it into the goal. Working together, Vaquerano supplied the assist on the decisive play to Lopez, giving Clackamas its first lead. With two minutes remaining, Clackamas High School secured a 2-1 victory over Roosevelt that Thursday, completing a comeback despite the adversities they faced.
Roosevelt’s early goal and double coverage on Lopez presented two distinct challenges, but Clackamas found a scoring response to each through Farris’ breakaway and the corner-kick finish. Clackamas plays Gresham in its next contest on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
