Des Moines Lincoln faces another ranked test in road match at Ames

Des Moines Lincoln returns to the field Tuesday night for another demanding ranked matchup, traveling to Ames for a varsity girls soccer contest at 1801 Ridgewood Ave. The Rails enter at 2-3-1 and are looking for a quick response after a 2-0 loss Monday night to No. 12 Bondurant in Class 2A. The turnaround is fast, but the opportunity is significant as Lincoln gets another chance to earn a statement win against a ranked opponent and build momentum before another game later this week.
Coach Tyger Nieters has identified Ames, ranked No. 13 in Class 3A, as a difficult opponent with plenty of attacking ability. That places the spotlight squarely on Lincoln's defensive shape and ability to stay organized for a full 80 minutes. The Rails' back line will be asked to absorb pressure, limit dangerous chances and keep the game within reach against an opponent expected to test them in space and around the box.
Just as important will be Lincoln's midfield, which could decide whether the match is played at Ames' tempo or the Rails' tempo. Author-supplied notes pointed to midfield organization as a central storyline, and that will be critical in slowing the Little Cyclones' attack before it reaches the defensive third. If Lincoln can connect passes cleanly, win second balls and avoid extended stretches pinned back, the Rails should give themselves a chance to stay competitive deep into the match.
Goalkeeper Katie Strong is one of the key players to watch for Lincoln. Strong faces a major assignment against a team known for its offensive capability, but her shot-stopping ability has already stood out this season. If she can continue to deter shots and keep Ames from turning pressure into multiple goals, Lincoln could remain in position to chase the kind of result that would resonate for a team still trying to add to its win total.
For Lincoln, the formula is clear. The Rails need a disciplined defensive effort, a composed midfield and enough resilience to handle a second straight ranked opponent on consecutive nights. A win would not only stand out on the schedule, it would also give Des Moines Lincoln a needed boost as the season moves deeper into a busy stretch.
